At least one person was killed and 16 others were injured after Russia launched one of its largest combined missile and drone attacks on the Ukrainian capital overnight, targeting Kyiv and the surrounding region with ballistic, hypersonic and cruise missiles, Ukrainian officials said on Sunday.

According to Ukraine's Air Force, Russian forces fired a total of 166 aerial weapons during the assault, including 125 attack drones, 25 ballistic missiles, 10 Zirkon hypersonic missiles and six additional missiles. Most of the projectiles were directed at Kyiv in what President Volodymyr Zelensky described as one of Russia's "largest ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv."

Air raid sirens sounded across central and eastern Ukraine shortly after 1:20 a.m. local time, with the first explosions heard in Kyiv around 1:30 a.m. The bombardment continued for more than an hour as successive waves of ballistic and hypersonic missiles struck the capital.

Ukraine's Air Force said its air defense systems intercepted 108 drones, one guided Kh-59/69 missile and 17 ballistic or Zirkon missiles. However, 23 missiles and 10 drones reached their targets, striking 10 locations, while debris from intercepted projectiles fell across 18 additional sites.

Emergency services said the attacks caused widespread destruction across multiple districts of Kyiv.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least nine of the injured were hospitalized, including three people in serious condition.

In the Dniprovskyi district, falling debris ignited a fire in a dormitory building, while smoke was reported near a shopping center. In the Desnyanskyi district, a strike hit the grounds of a commercial property, setting vehicles ablaze and sparking a warehouse fire.

In the Solomianskyi district, missile strikes triggered fires on the roof of a supermarket and a nearby residential building. Debris also struck a nine-story apartment block, shattering windows and prompting rescue workers to evacuate residents. One person was rescued from the second floor of the damaged building, while four others were saved from a burning five-story residential building in the same district.

Further damage was reported in the Shevchenkivskyi district, where falling debris set fire to part of a three-story administrative building and damaged more than 10 parked vehicles. Nearby residential buildings also sustained broken windows and fire damage.

Authorities additionally reported a strike on a residential building in Kyiv's Sviatoshynskyi district.

Outside the capital, the State Emergency Service said several warehouse buildings and a logistics facility near the Kyiv suburb of Bucha caught fire following the attack.

The overnight bombardment also disrupted public transportation, with the Lukianivska metro station temporarily closed after an explosion damaged its above-ground entrance.

Despite the destruction, signs of normal life began to return to parts of the city on Saturday morning. Vendors gathered at the open-air market near Lukianivska station to inspect their stalls, and shoppers arrived shortly afterward to purchase fresh produce and other essentials.

Drone activity continued after dawn, with Ukrainian authorities reporting additional attacks in Kyiv Oblast at around 10:00 a.m. Emergency crews remained at multiple impact sites as rescue, firefighting and damage assessment operations continued. (ILKHA)
