Pakistan seeks UN Security Council briefing on India tensions after Kashmir attack

Pakistan has announced plans to urgently brief the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on escalating tensions with India following a deadly April 22 attack in Indian-administered Kashmir that killed 26 people, according to state-run Radio Pakistan.
The move comes amid heightened friction between the nuclear-armed neighbors over the Pahalgam resort attack, which India has linked to alleged “cross-border” elements tied to Pakistan—a claim Islamabad firmly denies.
Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar instructed Pakistan’s UN envoy, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, to push for a UNSC meeting to address what Pakistan calls “India’s aggressive actions, provocations, and inflammatory statements.” Leveraging its position as a non-permanent UNSC member, Pakistan aims to highlight India’s recent suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, a 1960 agreement governing shared river usage, which Pakistan deems an “illegal measure” threatening regional stability.
“Pakistan will clarify how India’s actions endanger peace and security in South Asia and beyond,” the foreign ministry stated.
The briefing follows reciprocal diplomatic measures, including visa suspensions and partial recalls of diplomatic staff by both nations. Pakistan has also intensified outreach to allies, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif discussing the crisis with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Sunday, expressing alarm over India’s response to the Pahalgam incident.
Islamabad’s appeal to the UNSC marks a significant step to internationalize the Kashmir dispute, as it seeks global attention to what it describes as a looming regional security crisis. Pakistan has called for a neutral, third-party investigation into the attack to defuse tensions. (ILKHA)
