Palestinian football star donates World Cup earnings to Gaza relief

Palestinian footballer Wessam Abou Ali, star striker for Egypt’s Al-Ahly Club, announced on Monday that he will donate his entire financial earnings from the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup to support humanitarian and relief efforts in Gaza.
The Palestinian news agency Sannad reported that Abou Ali’s tournament bonus, estimated at 25 million Egyptian pounds, will aid Gaza, which has faced over 21 months of devastating conflict and starvation.
Abou Ali captured global attention during the ongoing Club World Cup in the United States, where he scored a hat-trick against Portugal’s FC Porto, solidifying his reputation as a standout talent. His decision to direct his earnings to Gaza underscores his commitment to supporting his homeland amid its ongoing humanitarian crisis.
On the same day, Al-Ahly’s sporting director, Mohamed Youssef, confirmed that the club would retain the 26-year-old Palestinian star despite lucrative offers from European and Gulf teams. Abou Ali has been a pivotal figure for Al-Ahly, scoring 38 goals and providing 10 assists in 60 matches across various competitions. His contributions were instrumental in securing back-to-back Egyptian Premier League titles, the 2024 CAF Champions League, and the domestic Super Cup. Additionally, he earned the Egyptian Premier League top scorer award for the 2023-2024 season.
Abou Ali’s gesture has drawn widespread praise, with fans and activists lauding his dedication to both his sport and the Palestinian cause. The Club World Cup continues, with Al-Ahly preparing for its next match as Abou Ali remains a key player to watch. (ILKHA)
