Reporters Without Borders demands immediate media access to Gaza
Reporters Without Borders calls for immediate access to Gaza for independent journalists, highlighting unprecedented restrictions and the deadly toll on reporters since October 2023.
Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has urged the international community to pressure Israel to lift the two-year media blockade on the Gaza Strip, warning that preventing independent journalists from entering the territory constitutes a clear violation of the public’s right to information.
Based on information from RSF, since October 2023, no foreign or independent journalists have been allowed entry, leaving local reporters isolated and exposed to life-threatening conditions amid systematic disinformation campaigns. RSF has also provided legal support to the Foreign Press Association in a lawsuit filed to the Israeli High Court demanding media access to Gaza.
Antoine Bernard, RSF’s Director of Defense and Support, stated: “The blockade is not just an attack on journalists; it deprives the people of Gaza of their right to accurate and reliable information.” RSF data indicates that over 210 journalists have been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023, at least 56 of them while performing journalistic duties.
International outlets, including Al Jazeera and Reuters, have covered ongoing humanitarian and security crises in Gaza, underscoring the urgency of unrestricted media access. RSF described the blockade as an unprecedented assault on press freedom and called for immediate global action to allow independent reporting from the region. (ILKHA)
