Russia warns of 'catastrophic risks' in strikes on Iran's nuclear sites

Russia has issued a stark warning against military strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, cautioning that such actions could have "catastrophic" consequences for regional and global security.
The statement comes amid heightened tensions following Iran's suspension of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova emphasized that halting further attacks is essential for restoring Iran's engagement with the IAEA, which has faced restricted access to Iranian nuclear sites in recent months. "Avoiding strikes is a prerequisite for meaningful progress," Zakharova said during a Wednesday briefing.
Highlighting ongoing diplomatic efforts, Zakharova pointed to recent trilateral talks involving Russia, China, and Iran as evidence that a peaceful resolution remains viable. The discussions, held in New York and Tehran, focused on preserving the 2015 nuclear deal and countering attempts to reinstate UN sanctions on Iran. "Good-faith dialogue can pave the way for progress," she added.
Both Russia and China have voiced support for Iran's proposal for a new framework of cooperation with the IAEA. The call follows a June decision by Iran's parliament to pause collaboration with the agency after a ceasefire with Israel, with Tehran demanding security guarantees before resuming access.
Zakharova reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to a diplomatic approach that ensures security for all parties and avoids military escalation, urging global powers to prioritize dialogue over confrontation. (ILKHA)
