Somalia has officially become the eighth member of the East African Community (EAC), aiming to boost economic growth after enduring three decades of conflict.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud described the move as a "beacon of hope" for Somalia, offering prospects for a future of opportunities and prosperity.
The decision to admit Somalia into the regional trade bloc was reached during a meeting of heads of member states in Arusha, Tanzania. The integration into the EAC marks a substantial step for Somalia, which has faced internal strife since 1991, with parts of the country under the control of the jihadist group al-Shabab.
The path to Somalia's admission into the EAC was not without challenges. Months of lobbying were met with skepticism from some member states, expressing concerns about the free movement of citizens within the EAC and potential security risks posed by al-Shabab fighters.
For acceptance into the EAC, new member countries must demonstrate adherence to principles of good governance, democracy, the rule of law, human rights, and social justice. Transparency International had ranked Somalia as the most corrupt country in the world last year, leading to reservations about its readiness to join the bloc.
Negotiations between the EAC and Somalia began in August, hosted by the Kenyan government. President Hassan assured the EAC of Somalia's commitment to addressing concerns, highlighting the nation's strategic coastline and its potential economic contributions.
Reactions to the announcement have been mixed, with supporters expressing that the admission was long overdue and would benefit the region significantly. Critics argue that more time should have been taken, expressing concerns that the EAC might inherit some of Somalia's challenges.
The EAC, with its aim to expand market size and integrate all countries in the Horn of Africa, has hinted at potential future members. Earlier this year, EAC Secretary General Peter Mathuki suggested that Djibouti and Ethiopia might also join, following the inclusion of the Democratic Republic of Congo in March last year. (ILKHA)
