South Korea rejects claims of U.S. troop withdrawal talks

South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense on Friday categorically denied reports suggesting that the United States is considering a significant reduction of its military presence on the Korean Peninsula.
The statement addressed a Wall Street Journal article claiming that the U.S. Department of Defense is contemplating withdrawing approximately 4,500 troops from the 28,500 stationed in South Korea, potentially redeploying them to other Indo-Pacific locations like Guam.
“The Republic of Korea and the United States maintain a strong alliance and are fully committed to deterring North Korean aggression,” the ministry said, according to Yonhap News Agency. It emphasized that the presence of U.S. Forces Korea (USFK), combined with South Korea’s military capabilities, remains critical for peace and stability in the region.
The denial comes amid heightened speculation about U.S. military commitments abroad and ahead of South Korea’s snap presidential election on June 3, prompted by recent political turmoil. The incoming administration is expected to focus on economic recovery and strengthening ties with Washington, including addressing U.S. tariffs on South Korean exports.
Under a 2024 cost-sharing agreement, South Korea will contribute $1.1 billion in 2026 to support U.S. forces, an 8.3% increase from 2025. While past U.S. administrations have linked military spending to trade negotiations, South Korean officials insist that defense contributions should remain separate from commercial talks.
Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to a united defense posture, focusing on countering North Korea’s provocations and ensuring regional stability. (ILKHA)
