Spain announces arms embargo on Israel to stop Gaza genocide

Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez unveiled a sweeping set of measures on Monday aimed at stopping the ongoing genocide in Gaza and supporting the Palestinian people.
The announcement, made during a televised address, underscores Spain’s position as one of the most vocal European critics of Israel’s devastating campaign against Gaza.
The nine-point plan includes an arms embargo on Israel and a ban on vessels carrying fuel for the Israeli military from entering Spanish ports, measures designed to limit the continuation of Israel’s offensive. Sánchez emphasized that the government’s actions aim to “stop the genocide in Gaza, pursue its perpetrators and support the Palestinian population.”
The Spanish government will also prohibit the sale or purchase of military equipment with Israel, a policy previously applied since the start of the conflict, and will reduce the transport of military equipment to Israel by air. Additionally, anyone found to be participating directly in the genocide or committing war crimes in Gaza will be barred from entering Spanish territory.
In an effort to support Palestinian rights, Spain will ban imports from illegal Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories, seeking to curb forced displacement and uphold the two-state solution. Consular services for Spanish citizens residing in settlements will be limited to legally mandated assistance only.
Beyond sanctions, Sánchez announced humanitarian and development initiatives to aid the Palestinian Authority, including projects in agriculture, food security, medical support, and additional humanitarian funding for Palestinian civilians.
Sánchez has repeatedly referred to Israel’s campaign as a genocide, breaking with many European allies. In 2024, his leftist government formally recognized a Palestinian state, further angering the Israeli government.
The announcement comes amid the ongoing Israeli offensive in Gaza, which, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, has killed at least 64,368 Palestinians, most of them civilians. The United Nations has described the situation as a severe humanitarian crisis, emphasizing the urgent need to halt mass killings, forced displacement, and attacks on infrastructure.
Spain’s decisive steps mark one of the most prominent European interventions in support of Palestinian rights, signaling growing international pressure on Israel to end its aggression and abide by international law. (ILKHA)
