Tourists rescued by sea as wildfire sweeps Sardinia coast in Italy

A massive wildfire erupted near Villasimius, a popular tourist destination in southern Sardinia, forcing dozens of beachgoers to evacuate by boat after flames cut off land escape routes, local firefighters confirmed on Monday.
The blaze, driven by strong winds and scorching dry conditions, sent thick columns of black smoke across the coastline, creating chaotic scenes as tourists and residents scrambled for safety.
As the fire spread rapidly toward the beach, land access was blocked, leaving boats as the only viable evacuation method. Witnesses described scenes of panic as people waded into the water to reach rescue vessels.
Several vehicles parked near the shore were destroyed, firefighters said, but no injuries have been reported.
Rescue operations have been complicated by gusty winds that both intensified the flames and limited aerial firefighting capabilities. Fire crews, supported by helicopters, remain on site to contain the blaze.
Sardinia, like much of southern Italy, has faced an unprecedented wildfire season, fueled by prolonged droughts and extreme heatwaves. The Italian Civil Protection Agency has warned that 2025 ranks among the hottest summers on record, with climate change amplifying wildfire risk.
Villasimius, famed for its pristine beaches and turquoise waters, draws thousands of visitors each year. Local authorities are now assessing potential damage to the tourism-dependent economy, which has already been strained by recurring climate-driven disasters.
Efforts to contain the fire continue, with officials urging residents and tourists to remain alert as hot, windy weather is forecast to persist. Evacuation orders remain in effect for affected coastal areas. (ILKHA)
