Türkiye welcomes US and EU moves to lift sanctions on Syria

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has welcomed the recent decisions by the United States and the European Union to ease sanctions on Syria, describing the move as a positive step toward restoring stability and security in the war-torn country.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Öncü Keçeli issued a statement on Saturday in response to a media query, saying that Ankara views the lifting of sanctions as “critical” in the broader context of efforts to normalize the situation in Syria after over a decade of conflict.
“The recent steps taken by the USA and the European Union to lift sanctions imposed on Syria are welcome,” Keçeli stated. “These arrangements are of critical importance in efforts to restore stability and security in Syria.”
He further emphasized Türkiye’s readiness to support initiatives that would contribute to Syria’s economic recovery and reconstruction. “Türkiye will continue to support steps that will contribute to economic development in Syria through its institutional capacity, the entrepreneurial power of its private sector, and the activities it will implement together with all third countries that are open to cooperation,” Keçeli added.
Türkiye has long advocated for a political resolution to the Syrian conflict, calling for reforms, reconciliation, and economic revitalization to prevent further displacement and regional instability. The latest remarks signal Ankara’s willingness to take an active role in Syria’s post-conflict rebuilding process and work with international partners to that end.
The statement also comes amid broader diplomatic engagement on Syria's future, as regional and international actors reassess their policies and consider pathways for reintegration and reconstruction. (ILKHA)
