Typhoon Kajiki death toll rises to seven as Vietnam faces widespread destruction

The death toll from Typhoon Kajiki and the resulting floods in Vietnam has climbed to seven, with one person still missing and 34 others injured, according to the Vietnam News Agency on Wednesday.
The storm, the fifth to hit the country this year, has caused extensive damage across northern and central provinces.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment reported that 15 homes were destroyed and over 8,700 others damaged, including 63 schools and eight medical facilities. More than 81,500 hectares of rice fields were submerged, and approximately 2,000 livestock and poultry perished, leaving many communities struggling to recover.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has ordered local authorities to prioritize the restoration of essential services, including electricity, telecommunications, transportation, schools, and healthcare facilities. Urgent efforts are underway to deliver relief supplies and repair homes, aiming to stabilize affected communities ahead of the new school year.
As of Wednesday afternoon, heavy rainfall from Kajiki’s remnants continues to affect parts of northern Vietnam, with some areas receiving up to 300 mm of rain in the past 24 hours. The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting has warned of a high risk of flash floods and landslides in mountainous regions, urging residents to remain vigilant.
Emergency response teams have been deployed to assist with evacuations and provide aid to isolated communities. The government has announced plans to distribute food, clean water, and temporary shelter to over 10,000 displaced residents, while international aid organizations are coordinating with local authorities to support recovery efforts, including rebuilding infrastructure and ensuring access to medical care.
Typhoon Kajiki made landfall earlier this week, bringing powerful winds and torrential rains that battered multiple provinces. Authorities are now preparing for potential secondary impacts, including disease outbreaks in flood-affected areas, and continue to urge residents to follow official safety advisories as recovery operations intensify.
