UN Chief slams Israeli massacre of starving Palestinians in Khan Yunis

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the brutal Israeli massacre that claimed the lives of 51 Palestinians and left over 200 injured, many critically, in southern Gaza’s Khan Yunis Governorate, as they waited for humanitarian food aid.
Describing the deliberate killing of civilians seeking food under siege as “unacceptable,” Guterres renewed his call for an “immediate and independent investigation” and demanded accountability for the growing list of Israeli war crimes in the besieged Gaza Strip.
The remarks were delivered by Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, during a press briefing in Geneva, as reported by UN News.
Tuesday morning’s massacre took place at the Tahlia Roundabout, a key food distribution site where hundreds of starving families had gathered in hopes of receiving vital aid. Witnesses reported that Israeli occupation forces opened fire on the crowd without provocation.
The result: a bloodbath among civilians, many of them already weakened by hunger, malnutrition, and displacement.
“This is not a humanitarian failure—it is a deliberate, inhumane policy of extermination,” said one Palestinian health worker on the ground.
Guterres, through his spokesperson, condemned “the loss of life and injuries among civilians in Gaza, who are once again being shot while seeking food.” He called this act a clear violation of humanitarian norms and international law.
He reiterated his urgent demand for an immediate and independent investigation into repeated attacks on aid distribution centers in Gaza, where desperate civilians—often children and elderly—are being systematically targeted by the Israeli military.
The UN Secretary-General emphasized that the basic needs of Palestinians in Gaza are “enormous and remain unmet” under Israel’s devastating blockade and deliberate obstruction of humanitarian aid. He urged the restoration of “immediate, widespread, and unhindered” humanitarian access, stressing that UN and aid agencies must be allowed to operate “safely and in full respect of humanitarian principles.”
Despite growing global condemnation, Israel continues its indiscriminate targeting of aid lines and civilians, deepening Gaza’s catastrophic hunger crisis and forcing the population toward mass starvation.
Guterres’s comments reflect the mounting international frustration with Israel’s impunity. However, Palestinians and human rights advocates demand more than words—they demand real accountability, sanctions, and protection for the civilian population.
As Gaza’s people continue to die while reaching for bread, the world watches. Whether it acts remains to be seen. (ILKHA)
