The UN refugee agency estimates that 280,000 Syrian refugees have returned to their homes following the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in December 2024, according to UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi.
In a statement on X, Grandi also reported that more than 800,000 internally displaced Syrians have returned to their communities. However, he emphasized the urgency of accelerating early recovery efforts to prevent further displacement.
"Early recovery efforts must be bolder and faster, though, otherwise people will leave again: this is now urgent!" Grandi said.
Following the collapse of his government, Assad fled to Russia as anti-regime forces seized control of Damascus. In late January, Ahmed al-Sharaa was appointed as Syria’s new president, marking a significant political shift in the war-torn nation.
The ongoing situation underscores the importance of rebuilding efforts to stabilize Syria and ensure the sustainable return of displaced citizens. (ILKHA)
