UN sends relief teams to northern Afghanistan following deadly earthquake
The United Nations has deployed emergency relief teams to northern Afghanistan after a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck the region early Sunday morning, leaving at least 23 people dead and around 320 others injured, according to the Ministry of Public Health.
The earthquake hit at approximately 1:00 a.m. local time, with its epicenter located in the Khulm district of Balkh province. Tremors were also felt in Kabul, Samangan, Sar-i-Pul, and Kunduz provinces, causing panic among residents and damage to buildings across the affected areas.
In a statement posted on its X (formerly Twitter) account, the United Nations Mission in Afghanistan said: “Just weeks after a deadly earthquake in eastern Afghanistan, the north has now been struck by another strong quake. Our teams and partners are on the ground to assess needs and deliver urgent aid. We stand with the affected communities and will provide the necessary support.”
The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) also confirmed the casualties and damage. Spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid wrote on X: “Last night’s earthquake caused loss of life and property in Balkh, Samangan, and Baghlan provinces. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy.”
Mujahid added that government agencies and local officials are actively working to provide emergency services, medical assistance, and relief supplies to those affected, emphasizing the importance of rapid response to minimize further harm.
This earthquake comes weeks after a deadly quake in eastern Afghanistan that killed more than 1,000 people, highlighting the country’s vulnerability to seismic activity. Northern Afghanistan sits on several fault lines where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, making it one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the world.
The UN and local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as search, rescue, and relief operations are underway to assist survivors and provide critical aid to affected communities. (ILKHA)
