Venezuela earthquake death toll rises to 5,119 as recovery operations continue
The death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela last month has climbed to 5,119, according to National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez, as rescue and recovery operations continue across the country's hardest-hit regions.
Rodriguez said 16,740 people have been injured by the powerful earthquakes, while authorities have provided assistance to 128,324 affected families. A total of 107 temporary shelters remain in operation, housing 21,470 displaced residents, with approximately 18,000 people still without permanent housing.
The official said the disaster damaged 856 buildings, including 190 structures that completely collapsed. Authorities have also recorded 1,350 aftershocks since the initial earthquakes, highlighting the continued seismic activity in the affected areas.
The twin earthquakes, measuring magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, struck Venezuela on June 24, causing widespread destruction to homes, public infrastructure, roads and essential services. Coastal areas, particularly La Guaira state, were among the worst affected, with emergency crews continuing debris removal and searches in severely damaged neighborhoods.
Authorities said emergency response teams remain focused on providing humanitarian assistance, restoring basic services and relocating displaced families. Reconstruction efforts are expected to take months as engineers assess the structural safety of damaged buildings and critical infrastructure.
International humanitarian support has also expanded in recent weeks. The European Union has announced additional emergency funding to assist with medical supplies, relief operations and reconstruction, while several international organizations continue to provide aid to communities devastated by the disaster.
