Vietnam evacuates 586,000 as Typhoon Kajiki approaches

Vietnam is on high alert as Typhoon Kajiki, the strongest storm to threaten the country this year, approaches, prompting authorities to order widespread evacuations, close airports, and shut schools in a major preparedness effort.
The Vietnam Meteorological Agency reported that Kajiki, with wind speeds reaching up to 166 kilometers per hour, is expected to make landfall Monday afternoon. The storm is forecast to bring heavy rainfall, flooding, and potential landslides across central and northern provinces.
In anticipation of the typhoon, the government has mandated the evacuation of over 586,000 people from high-risk areas, prioritizing coastal and low-lying regions prone to flooding. To support these efforts, more than 16,500 soldiers and 107,000 paramilitary personnel have been mobilized, with emergency response teams on standby for potential search-and-rescue operations.
As of Tuesday morning, updated reports from the Vietnam Disaster Management Authority indicate that Kajiki has slightly weakened but remains a dangerous Category 3 typhoon, with sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour. The central provinces of Nghe An and Ha Tinh are expected to be hardest hit, with rainfall forecasts reaching 400 millimeters in some areas, raising concerns about severe flooding and landslides in mountainous regions.
All domestic and international flights have been suspended at major airports, including Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi and Da Nang International Airport, until the storm passes. Schools across affected provinces have also been closed, and residents have been urged to secure their homes and stockpile essential supplies. Coastal fishing vessels have been recalled to port, and maritime activity has been restricted to prevent casualties at sea.
In a televised address, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized the importance of following evacuation orders, stating: “The safety of our people is the top priority. We are fully mobilizing resources to protect lives and minimize damage.”
Vietnam’s proactive measures reflect lessons learned from past typhoons, which have caused significant loss of life and property. As Kajiki approaches, authorities continue to urge residents to monitor official channels and prepare for prolonged disruptions in the coming days. (ILKHA)
