Zelensky, Trump expected to sign landmark Ukraine-U.S. deal

Ukraine and the United States are on the verge of finalizing an agreement that would grant Washington access to Ukrainian natural resources in exchange for continued U.S. assistance, Ukrainian officials announced Monday.
The deal, however, has stirred tensions, with Kiev pushing back against U.S. pressure to sign despite earlier drafts lacking robust security guarantees.
Deputy Prime Minister Olga Stefanishyna took to X to update on the talks, calling them “very constructive” and noting that “nearly all key details” have been settled. She emphasized Ukraine’s urgency to wrap up negotiations swiftly for a formal signing, expressing hope that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump could finalize the pact in Washington as a symbol of long-term partnership.
The negotiations come amid Zelensky’s insistence on securing “real security guarantees” from the U.S. in return for access to Ukraine’s valuable resources. Sources indicate that Trump has specifically requested access to rare minerals, tying it to military support provided to Kiev under the previous Biden administration.
U.S. officials have reportedly pressed Ukraine to approve the contract, but Kiev has held firm, arguing earlier versions fell short on critical protections. “We are committed to completing this swiftly to proceed with its signature,” Stefanishyna wrote, underscoring Ukraine’s desire to cement a decades-long alliance with the U.S.
The deal, if signed, could reshape Ukraine’s economic and security ties with Washington, though lingering disagreements highlight the delicate balance of interests at play. Further developments are expected as both sides push toward a resolution. (ILKHA)
