UNRWA: 260,000 Gaza children enroll in distance learning program amid ongoing recovery efforts

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) announced on Tuesday that nearly 260,000 children from the Gaza Strip have enrolled in its distance learning program since January.
The initiative aims to provide educational continuity for students amid the severe disruptions caused by the recent conflict in the region.
In a post on the X platform, UNRWA highlighted the enrollment figures and detailed its ongoing efforts to support Gaza’s population. The agency noted that its health teams continue to deliver mental health and psychosocial support services in the Middle and Khan Younis areas, addressing the emotional toll of the war. Additionally, UNRWA is assisting special cases referred from health centers and shelters, ensuring targeted care for vulnerable individuals.
Since a ceasefire took effect, UNRWA teams have responded to over 15,000 cases, facilitating the return of thousands of displaced persons to their original residences—many of which were left destroyed or heavily damaged. The agency’s efforts come as the Gaza Strip grapples with the aftermath of what has been described as a genocidal war waged by Israel.
The new school year began on February 23, facing significant obstacles due to widespread destruction of educational infrastructure. According to UNRWA, 95% of school and educational buildings in Gaza have sustained varying degrees of damage, with 85% rendered fully or partially inoperable due to the months-long conflict. Despite these challenges, the distance learning program represents a critical lifeline for students striving to continue their education. (ILKHA)
