School life expectancy in Türkiye declines slightly in 2024

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) announced on Monday that the national school life expectancy (SLE) in Türkiye was 17.2 years in 2024, reflecting the expected duration of education from primary school entrance until completion of the highest level of education.
The data shows that school life expectancy from primary school to the upper secondary education level was 11.9 years, while pre-primary education accounted for 1.5 years. Compared to the previous year, overall SLE decreased by 3.4%. For males, SLE fell by 3.8% to 16.7 years, while for females, it declined by 3.0%, reaching 17.6 years.
At the provincial level, the highest school life expectancy was recorded in Karabük and İstanbul, both with 19.0 years. Bayburt followed closely at 18.9 years, with Ankara at 18.6 years, and Rize, Erzincan, and Tunceli at 18.5 years. The provinces with the lowest SLE were Şanlıurfa and Şırnak at 14.4 years, followed by Muş (14.6), Ağrı (14.7), and Mardin (15.2).
When broken down by gender, SLE was highest among males in Bayburt and among females in Tunceli. For males, the top provinces included Bayburt, Karabük, İstanbul, Erzincan, and Ankara, while the lowest SLE was observed in Ağrı, Şırnak, Muş, Şanlıurfa, and Mardin. For females, the highest SLE was in Tunceli, followed by Karabük, İstanbul, Ankara, and Rize, with the lowest values in Şanlıurfa, Şırnak, Muş, Ağrı, and Mardin.
The SLE-oriented gender parity index (GPI), which measures the ratio of female to male SLE, reached 1.05 in 2024 for the ISCED 1–8 education levels, indicating that females are spending more years in school than males. The GPI has steadily increased from 0.97 in 2018, reflecting continued improvement in educational gender equality.
Provinces with the highest GPI were Iğdır (1.14), Tunceli (1.12), Bartın (1.10), Çankırı (1.09), and Karaman (1.09). The lowest GPI values were recorded in Şanlıurfa (0.96), Bitlis and Siirt (0.97), and Erzurum and Muş (0.99).
TurkStat’s findings highlight both progress and challenges in Türkiye’s education system, with notable gender improvements alongside regional disparities that continue to affect school life expectancy. (ILKHA)
