Air Canada jet collides with ground vehicle at New York airport
A passenger jet operated by Air Canada collided with a ground vehicle at LaGuardia Airport in New York City on Monday evening, prompting a temporary shutdown of the busy airport and disrupting flight operations.
According to data from Flightradar24, the regional CRJ-900 aircraft, arriving from Montreal, struck a vehicle on the runway during landing while traveling at approximately 39 kilometers per hour. The flight was operated by Jazz Aviation, a regional partner of Air Canada.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a “ground stop” order for all flights at LaGuardia following the incident, citing an emergency situation. Initial notices indicated that flight operations could remain suspended for several hours, with inbound aircraft diverted to alternate airports or returned to their points of origin.
Emergency responders, including the New York City Fire Department, confirmed that crews were dispatched to a collision involving an aircraft and a vehicle on the runway. While officials did not immediately disclose full details, multiple international media outlets reported that the vehicle involved was an airport emergency or fire response unit.
Reports from global agencies, including Reuters and Associated Press, indicated that several people were injured in the incident, including crew members and personnel inside the ground vehicle. The extent of the injuries has not been fully clarified.
Unverified images circulating on social media suggested that the aircraft’s nose section sustained visible damage and was tilted upward after the collision. However, these visuals have not yet been independently confirmed.
Neither Air Canada nor FAA officials issued a detailed public statement immediately following the incident.
The accident caused significant disruption at one of the United States’ busiest airports, as authorities worked to secure the scene and assess damage. The incident is expected to be subject to further investigation by U.S. aviation authorities. (ILKHA)
