Erdoğan vows zero tolerance on school security after deadly attacks
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has vowed that the security of Türkiye’s schools remains the government’s foremost priority, with “no concessions whatsoever,” in response to two tragic school shootings that shook the nation last week in Kahramanmaraş and Şanlıurfa provinces.
Speaking to reporters after a Presidential Cabinet Meeting at the Presidential Complex on Monday, President Erdoğan expressed deep sorrow for the victims and outlined a comprehensive approach addressing not only security but also developmental psychology, social policy, family dynamics, and education.
“The security of our schools is our top priority. Even the slightest concession on this is and will be out of the question,” Erdoğan stated. “It is important that we address the developmental psychology, social policy, family’s role and education aspects of this issue besides its security aspect.”
Tragic Incidents Spark National MourningThe remarks come in the wake of two devastating attacks within 28 hours. On April 14, in Siverek district of Şanlıurfa province, a 19-year-old former student opened fire at a vocational high school, wounding 16 people — mostly students and teachers — before turning the gun on himself.
The following day, on April 15, a 14-year-old eighth-grade student, Isa Aras Mersinli, carried multiple firearms and ammunition — reportedly belonging to his retired police officer father — into Ayser Çalık Secondary School in Kahramanmaraş’s Onikişubat district. He opened fire in two classrooms, killing eight students (all aged around 11) and mathematics teacher Ayla Kara, 55. Thirteen others were injured, six critically. The death toll later rose to 10. Mersinli later died from his injuries.
Teacher Ayla Kara was hailed as a hero for shielding her students with her body, sustaining fatal wounds in the process. Funerals for the victims were held on April 16–17, drawing hundreds of mourners and plunging the country into collective grief.
Government Response: Enhanced Security and Broader ReformsErdoğan announced several immediate and long-term measures. These include boosting cyber patrolling, strengthening cyber units with artificial intelligence to monitor the “dark tunnels of the internet,” and increasing visible and invisible online presence. He also emphasized enhancing school-police cooperation and developing new operational models.
“I have given the necessary instructions to our relevant ministries to do what is required without any hesitation,” he said. The President highlighted the critical role of the family, describing it as “the first school” where values, discipline, and social skills are instilled. He pointed to weakened family communication and lack of boundaries as factors making children vulnerable to threats. Erdoğan called for stronger school-family-guidance collaboration beyond crisis moments.
In parallel actions, authorities have already implemented nationwide security upgrades: metal detectors, turnstiles, stricter visitor controls, increased police presence around schools, and tighter access protocols. Hundreds of suspects have been detained for spreading provocative online content related to the attacks.
Additional steps under consideration include legal reforms on firearm ownership and storage — with stricter penalties for parents whose weapons are accessed by children — as well as expanded psychological support in schools.
The incidents, though not linked by authorities to terrorism, have ignited widespread debate on youth mental health, gun access, online influences, and societal pressures. Education unions and experts stress that while physical security is essential, addressing root causes like family dynamics, bullying, and digital radicalization is equally vital.
President Erdoğan’s address underscored a holistic national effort: “We have been drawing attention to strong individual, strong family and strong society... We will protect the family in the face of increasing attacks.”As Turkey mourns its lost children and educator, the government’s pledge signals a determined push to ensure such tragedies are never repeated.
