Four detained over suspected firework-linked forest fire as Türkiye battles blazes

Turkish authorities have detained four people in connection with a forest fire allegedly sparked by fireworks in the northwestern city of Bursa, as firefighters work to bring the last remaining blaze in the country under control.
The suspects — identified by their initials S.D., A.K., M.B., and M.A. — were arrested in Bursa’s Osmangazi district after a fire broke out in a wooded area of the Muradiye neighbourhood on Monday night. The blaze, reportedly ignited by fireworks, was quickly extinguished by fire crews.
Bursa’s Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into the incident. The detainees are undergoing police procedures.
The arrests come as Türkiye continues to battle a major forest fire between Bursa’s Harmancık and Orhaneli districts. Agriculture and Forestry Minister İbrahim Yumaklı said on Tuesday that the Harmancık blaze was the only active fire in the country, with all 55 others reported in the past 24 hours now under control.
Speaking at a news conference at the General Directorate of Forestry’s Fire Management Centre in Ankara, Yumaklı said the response to the remaining fire involved “five aircraft, 30 helicopters, and 855 ground vehicles.”
He confirmed that fires in Karabük’s Safranbolu, Antalya’s Gazipaşa, and Bursa’s Kestel districts had also been brought fully under control.
“Dense fog, heavy smoke in the mornings, and strong winds in the afternoons have complicated aerial interventions,” he said. “But our teams on the ground have been working day and night.”
The Harmancık fire, which began on 26 July, has prompted precautionary evacuations in several rural neighbourhoods. Authorities have arrested another suspect believed to be linked to the blaze.
Meanwhile, the efforts of local residents have drawn attention on social media. Farmer Ramazan Doğru, 64, from Keles district, volunteered to deliver water to the fire zone despite driving on a damaged tire after it went flat en route.
“I heard the cries of animals and saw the destruction,” Doğru said. “The tire can be replaced, but the tree and the ant cannot. This is our forest, our homeland.”
Minister Yumaklı urged the public to remain vigilant, warning that the risk of wildfires will remain high until October.
“At the slightest sign of fire, please call 112 immediately,” he said, thanking citizens, ministries, institutions, and the media for their support in combating the fires. (ILKHA)
