Magnitude 5.2 earthquake shakes central Türkiye

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck near the town of Kulu in Türkiye’s central Konya province on Thursday afternoon, May 15, 2025, at 3:46 p.m. local time, according to geological monitoring agencies.
The tremor, which occurred approximately 17.2 kilometers (11 miles) from Kulu, originated at a shallow depth of 18.7 kilometers (12 miles). Due to its shallow focus, the quake was strongly felt in the surrounding region, including in parts of Ankara, the nation’s capital.
Residents across central Türkiye reported a sharp jolt, with some briefly evacuating buildings out of precaution. Authorities have confirmed that, as of now, there are no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage.
Emergency response teams have been dispatched to assess the situation on the ground and to monitor the possibility of aftershocks. Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) has urged residents to remain cautious and to follow official guidance.
Türkiye lies on several active fault lines and is prone to frequent seismic activity. The latest tremor, while moderate in strength, serves as a reminder of the country’s ongoing earthquake risk.
Authorities continue to assess the impact and will provide updates as more information becomes available. (ILKHA)
