Oil rig collapse in southeastern Türkiye leaves one worker dead, two injured

An oil drilling installation collapsed in Turkey's southeastern province of Şırnak on Sunday, July 21st, killing one worker and injuring two others, according to local authorities.
The incident occurred at a drilling site in the Mount Gabar region. An engineer lost his life after becoming trapped under debris, reported Şırnak Governor Cevdet Atay following a visit to the accident scene.
Another worker, a driller, was rescued immediately and airlifted to the hospital by helicopter. A third worker sustained minor injuries.
The cause of the collapse remains under investigation by authorities.
The Turkish Petroleum Corporation began drilling operations in the Gabar region in 2022. According to Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, oil production from the 41 wells at the Gabar field has reached 45,000 barrels per day, with a target to increase production to 100,000 barrels per day from 95 wells.
