Syria's interim President, Ahmed al-Sharaa, is scheduled to make an official visit to Ankara on Tuesday at the invitation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The announcement was made by Türkiye's Communications Director, Fahrettin Altun, on Monday through a post on X.
The meeting will take place at the Presidential Complex in Ankara, where the focus will be on addressing the multifaceted developments in Syria. The agenda includes discussions on joint initiatives aimed at the country's economic recovery, achieving sustainable stability, and ensuring security after years of conflict.
Altun stated that the talks would also cover the potential support that could be extended to Syria's new administration and its people through international cooperation. He expressed optimism about the future of Türkiye-Syria relations, suggesting that this visit by Sharaa and his delegation could mark a significant step towards strengthening ties between the two nations post-liberation.
This diplomatic engagement comes in the wake of monumental changes in Syrian politics. Bashar Assad, who had led Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia following the fall of Damascus to anti-regime forces on December 8, 2024, which ended the Baath Party's long-standing regime that had been in power since 1963.
The Syrian military operations administration recently appointed Ahmed al-Sharaa as the transitional president in a move that also involved the repeal of the 2012 Constitution, the dissolution of the former regime's parliament, army, and security agencies.
This visit is seen as a crucial step in the reestablishment of diplomatic relations and cooperation between Turkey and Syria, aiming to foster a new era of peace and progress in the region. (ILKHA)
