Turkish communications chief commemorates 10th anniversary of July 15 coup attempt
Turkish Presidency's Head of Communications Burhanettin Duran on Wednesday commemorated the 10th anniversary of the July 15, 2016, defeated coup attempt, describing it as a defining moment in Türkiye's history when the nation united to defend its democracy, independence, and constitutional order.
In a statement issued on the occasion of July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day, Duran said the failed coup attempt remains one of the most significant milestones in the country's modern history, emphasizing that the Turkish people demonstrated their unwavering commitment to the nation's sovereignty and democratic institutions.
"Will of the Nation, Victory of Democracy," Duran said, framing the anniversary as a symbol of the Turkish people's determination to protect their elected government and national will.
He described July 15, 2016, as a day that "will forever be etched in our collective memory," saying the resistance mounted by citizens represented a historic struggle in defense of Türkiye's independence and state.
Duran praised the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during the events of July 15, stating that the Turkish nation, through "courage, foresight, and unwavering resolve," sent a clear message that the national will could never be subdued by anti-democratic forces.
According to Duran, the public's response not only thwarted the coup attempt but also became a turning point in safeguarding Türkiye's democratic future and strengthening its national unity.
He stressed the importance of preserving the memory of July 15, arguing that remembering the events is both a tribute to those who lost their lives and a responsibility toward future generations.
"Remembering and never forgetting July 15 is a matter of loyalty to our noble martyrs and heroic veterans, as well as a duty borne out of our responsibility to future generations," Duran said.
He added that strong states are sustained not only by their institutional capabilities but also by societies that preserve their history, national values, and collective memory.
Marking the 10th anniversary of the failed coup attempt, Duran paid tribute to those who were killed while resisting the plot and expressed gratitude to veterans who took part in defending the country's democratic institutions.
"I commemorate with mercy and gratitude our noble martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the homeland, and I express my gratitude to our heroic veterans," he said.
Türkiye marks July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day each year with ceremonies, commemorative events, and official programs honoring those who died and those who were injured while opposing the 2016 coup attempt. (ILKHA)
