Turkish Foreign Minister Fidan meets Hamas delegation in Ankara
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held talks in Ankara on Wednesday with a Hamas delegation led by Khalil al-Hayya, a member of the movement’s Political Bureau, according to sources from the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the meeting, the two sides reviewed the latest developments in the Gaza Strip, with a particular focus on the fragile ceasefire and ongoing diplomatic efforts related to the Gaza peace plan. Discussions included an exchange of views on phase two of the ceasefire framework, which is intended to pave the way for broader de-escalation and humanitarian relief.
Minister Fidan reaffirmed that Türkiye continues to defend the rights of the Palestinian people “in the strongest manner on every platform,” emphasizing Ankara’s principled stance on the Palestinian cause. He also briefed the Hamas delegation on Türkiye’s ongoing efforts to address urgent housing needs and deliver humanitarian assistance to Gaza, which has suffered widespread destruction as a result of the Israeli war.
The Hamas delegation stated that it has fully complied with the terms of the ceasefire, but accused Israel of continuing its attacks on Gaza and its civilian population. According to the delegation, these actions are aimed at undermining the transition to the second phase of the peace plan and prolonging the humanitarian crisis.
They further noted that approximately 60 percent of the trucks currently allowed to enter Gaza are carrying commercial goods, stressing that the volume of humanitarian aid remains far below what is required to meet urgent needs. The delegation highlighted acute shortages of basic necessities, medicines, shelter materials, and fuel, warning that the situation on the ground remains dire.
The talks also addressed inter-Palestinian reconciliation efforts and the evolving situation in the occupied West Bank. During the discussions, Israel’s ongoing practices in the West Bank were described as unacceptable, amid escalating raids, settlement expansion, and violence against Palestinians.
The meeting underscored Türkiye’s continued diplomatic engagement on Gaza and the Palestinian issue, as well as Ankara’s support for efforts aimed at achieving a lasting ceasefire, humanitarian relief, and Palestinian unity. (ILKHA)
