Turkish Foreign Minister to visit Qatar for talks on Iran war and Gulf security
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is set to visit Qatar on Tuesday for high-level talks focused on the ongoing Iran war, its regional repercussions, and efforts to ensure navigational safety in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Turkish diplomatic sources.
The visit comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf following the escalation of the US-Israeli war with Iran. Türkiye, a NATO member sharing a border with Iran, has maintained active diplomatic contact with multiple parties since the outbreak of the conflict, including the United States, Iran, and regional mediator Pakistan.
Ankara has consistently called for an immediate end to the war, condemning attacks on Iranian territory while also criticizing Iranian strikes on Gulf states as unacceptable, reflecting its attempt to balance regional stability with diplomatic engagement.
During his visit to Doha, Fidan is expected to reaffirm Türkiye’s strong ties with Qatar and reiterate Ankara’s support for its Gulf partner amid rising regional tensions. The Turkish diplomatic source said he would also stress the importance of ensuring maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy corridor.
Fidan is also expected to emphasize that resolving the Gulf conflict remains the most urgent priority and to exchange views with Qatari officials on possible diplomatic initiatives aimed at de-escalation.
The Turkish foreign minister last visited Doha in March and has recently held separate phone calls with Iran’s foreign minister as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to manage regional tensions.
Türkiye and Qatar maintain strong bilateral relations across multiple sectors, including energy, trade, and defense cooperation. Ankara operates a military base in Qatar, reflecting deep strategic ties between the two countries.
The two sides are also reportedly in discussions regarding potential defense procurement, including Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets under agreements involving Britain, as part of broader efforts to strengthen Qatar’s air defense capabilities.
Fidan’s visit is expected to reinforce coordination between Ankara and Doha at a time when regional stability in the Gulf remains highly fragile amid ongoing conflict and maritime security concerns. (ILKHA)
