Turkish, Syrian defense ministers discuss bilateral security cooperation in phone call
Turkish National Defense Minister Yaşar Güler held a telephone conversation on Saturday with Syrian Defense Minister Major General Murhaf Abu Kasra, during which the two officials discussed bilateral defense relations and regional security developments.
According to a statement from Türkiye's Ministry of National Defense, the ministers exchanged views on defense and security issues of mutual interest, reflecting the ongoing dialogue between Ankara and Damascus as the two neighboring countries seek to strengthen coordination on regional challenges.
The talks come amid continued efforts by Türkiye and Syria to enhance security cooperation, particularly in combating terrorism, securing their shared border, and addressing developments that could affect regional stability.
Ankara has repeatedly emphasized that eliminating the presence of terrorist organizations along its southern border remains one of its primary national security priorities. Turkish officials have also stressed the importance of preserving Syria's territorial integrity and political unity while supporting efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in the country.
In recent months, defense and security contacts between Türkiye and Syria have intensified following the political changes in Damascus, with both sides working to establish practical mechanisms for military coordination and border security. The two countries have also explored avenues for cooperation on counterterrorism, the safe and voluntary return of Syrian refugees, and measures to prevent the resurgence of terrorist groups operating in the region.
The latest phone call underscores the growing diplomatic engagement between Ankara and Damascus as both governments seek to address common security concerns and contribute to broader regional stability through dialogue and cooperation. (ILKHA)
