Türkiye braces for snow and storms as cold wave sweeps 31 provinces

A powerful wave of cold weather has descended upon Türkiye, bringing snow, storms, and plunging temperatures to much of the country.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) and the General Directorate of Meteorology have issued weather warnings for 31 provinces, as authorities scramble to prepare for potential disruptions.
Meteorologists forecast heavy snowfall in elevated regions, including parts of Istanbul, with temperatures expected to drop below freezing on Friday and Saturday nights. The chill has already sparked concerns over icy roads and travel hazards. An “orange” alert—the second-highest level—has been declared for Hakkari and Van, while 29 other provinces are under “yellow” warnings for dangerous weather conditions.
Strong winds and storms are set to batter Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia today, with Elazığ and Hatay expected to bear the brunt. In Central Anatolia, steady rainfall since Wednesday noon is predicted to turn into sleet and snow overnight. Further south and east, Niğde, Kayseri, and Sivas are bracing for intense snow through Thursday morning, while the Eastern Black Sea provinces—Ordu, Tokat, Giresun, Trabzon, Rize, Gümüşhane, and Artvin—face heavy rain and snow in higher elevations.
In response, AFAD has sent emergency SMS alerts to residents of Hakkari and Van, warning of floods, lightning, wind damage, travel chaos, and avalanche risks. “We urge everyone to stay informed and take necessary precautions,” an AFAD spokesperson said, emphasizing the need to protect lives and property.
As the nation hunkers down, local authorities are on high alert, with citizens advised to heed official updates and brace for a challenging few days of wintry weather. (ILKHA)
