Turkish Presidency Communications Director Burhanettin Duran has welcomed the dissolution of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), describing the development as an important step toward strengthening state authority and fostering political unity in Syria.

Duran said in a statement on X that Türkiye had maintained a consistent position since the beginning of the Syrian crisis against efforts by terrorist organizations and external actors to fragment the country.

He said Türkiye's approach, under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, is based on the principle that Syria's future must be determined by the Syrian people themselves.

“From the very outset of the Syrian crisis, Türkiye has maintained a principled and resolute stance against attempts by terrorist organisations and external interventions to fragment the country,” Duran said.

“At the heart of this approach, pursued under the leadership of our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, lies the conviction that Syria’s future must be shaped solely by the will of the Syrian people.”

Ankara Welcomes SDF Dissolution

Duran described the dissolution of the SDF as a significant development in efforts to consolidate state authority throughout Syria and bring different segments of Syrian society together around common political principles.

He stressed, however, that the Syrian administration must continue pursuing an inclusive political approach to ensure that the development contributes to lasting stability.

“It is crucial that the Syrian administration continue to take steps based on inclusivity in order to establish lasting stability,” Duran said.

Türkiye has repeatedly emphasized the importance of Syria maintaining its territorial integrity and sovereignty, while opposing the establishment of structures that Ankara considers linked to terrorist organizations along its southern border.

‘Terror-Free Türkiye, Terror-Free Region’

Duran linked Ankara's approach to Syria to President Erdoğan's broader vision of a “Terror-free Türkiye” and a “Terror-free Region.”

He said Türkiye seeks a regional order in which ethnic, sectarian and social differences are not exploited as tools of conflict and where countries' borders and sovereign rights are respected.

“Establishing a regional order in which ethnic, sectarian and social differences are not turned into instruments of conflict, which is free from the tutelage of terrorist organisations, and in which borders and sovereign rights are safeguarded is of vital importance,” he said.

According to Duran, lasting security cannot be achieved through territorial division or externally imposed political projects. Instead, he argued that regional stability requires cooperation, peace and a shared future among the peoples of the region.

Türkiye Vows Continued Support for Syria

Duran also reiterated Türkiye's commitment to supporting Syria's recovery and reconstruction.

He said Ankara would continue standing alongside the Syrian people “in all their diversity” as they seek peace, stability and prosperity.

“Türkiye will continue to support Syria in getting back on its feet in the face of malign schemes and scenarios and will continue to stand by the Syrian people, in all their diversity, in their pursuit of peace and prosperity,” Duran said.

His remarks underscore Ankara's stated preference for a unified and sovereign Syria, while highlighting Türkiye's intention to remain actively engaged in developments in its southern neighbor.

Türkiye has argued that Syria's territorial integrity, political unity and the elimination of terrorist threats are essential to achieving long-term stability both inside Syria and across the wider region.
