Türkiye signals readiness to mediate Russia-Ukraine peace talks

Türkiye stands ready to support peace efforts between Russia and Ukraine, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan declared Monday during a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
Fidan emphasized that Ankara is closely tracking security guarantees and other key issues raised in recent U.S.-Russia discussions, signaling Türkiye’s willingness to play a pivotal role in ending the nearly four-year-long conflict.
“Under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s leadership, Türkiye has worked tirelessly to stop the war from the beginning,” Fidan said. “We are prepared to take every step that advances peace.” He highlighted a new U.S.-led push for a negotiated settlement, calling it a “results-oriented” effort that dovetails with Türkiye’s consistent advocacy for dialogue. “We believe a solution is achievable through talks involving both sides, and we’re ready to provide full support—including hosting negotiations,” he added.
Fidan also stressed Türkiye’s commitment to Black Sea navigation safety, describing it as a potential “confidence-building measure” amid regional tensions. The pledge builds on Ankara’s track record of mediation, including its facilitation of the 2022 Black Sea grain deal and earlier Russia-Ukraine talks.
The ministers also addressed Syria, where Fidan reaffirmed Türkiye’s dedication to preserving the country’s unity. “Syria’s territorial integrity must be upheld,” he said, noting that Ankara and Moscow share a mutual interest in curbing separatist movements. “We cannot allow terrorist groups to take hold there,” he warned.
Türkiye’s latest outreach comes as the Russia-Ukraine war enters its fourth year, with recent U.S.-Russian talks in Riyadh hinting at a possible diplomatic opening. Fidan’s remarks underscore Ankara’s strategic ambition to bridge divides and bolster stability across the region, leveraging its unique position between East and West. (ILKHA)
