Türkiye welcomes US decision to repeal Caesar Act sanctions on Syria
Türkiye has welcomed the United States’ decision to repeal sanctions imposed on Syria under the Caesar Act, describing the move as a positive step toward the country’s reconstruction and long-term stability.
In a written statement issued in response to a question, the Spokesperson of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Öncü Keçeli, said Ankara views the decision as an important development for Syria’s future.
“We welcome the repeal of the sanctions imposed on Syria under the Caesar Act by the USA,” Keçeli said.
He expressed hope that the decision would pave the way for broader international engagement in Syria’s recovery process. According to Keçeli, lifting the sanctions could help mobilize international cooperation for reconstruction and development efforts, which are seen as essential for restoring normalcy after years of conflict.
“We hope that this step will further encourage international cooperation for the reconstruction and development of Syria, thereby contributing to the strengthening of stability, security and prosperity in the country,” he added.
The Caesar Act, enacted by the United States in 2020, imposed wide-ranging sanctions targeting Syria’s government and individuals and entities supporting it. The measures had been widely criticized for exacerbating humanitarian and economic difficulties in the war-torn country.
Türkiye has consistently called for the removal of unilateral sanctions on Syria, arguing that such measures hinder humanitarian assistance, economic recovery and regional stability. Ankara has emphasized that Syria’s reconstruction and the well-being of its people are closely linked to peace and security in the wider region. (ILKHA)
