NASA reduces risk of asteroid 2024 YR4 impacting earth

NASA has significantly lowered the risk of asteroid 2024 YR4 posing a threat to Earth in the foreseeable future.
Initially, when the asteroid was first discovered, there was a very small but notable chance that it could impact Earth in 2032. However, as more observational data was submitted to the Minor Planet Center, experts at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and its Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) were able to refine their trajectory models.
According to the latest calculations, the probability of asteroid 2024 YR4 impacting Earth on December 22, 2032, has been updated to only 0.004%. Further analysis has also ruled out any significant impact threat from the asteroid for at least the next century. With additional observations reducing uncertainties regarding its trajectory, experts confirm that the range of possible locations for the asteroid on the projected date has moved farther away from Earth.
While the risk to Earth has diminished considerably, there remains a very small possibility that asteroid 2024 YR4 could impact the Moon on December 22, 2032. Current models indicate a 1.7% probability of such an event occurring. NASA will continue to monitor the asteroid closely, using observatories funded by its Planetary Defense Coordination Office. Additionally, the James Webb Space Telescope is set to observe 2024 YR4 in March to gather further data about its size and composition for scientific research.
Although 2024 YR4 no longer presents a major threat to Earth, the event provided a crucial opportunity for NASA and its partner institutions to test planetary defense strategies and notification procedures. The study and monitoring of near-Earth objects remain a high priority for NASA, ensuring preparedness for potential future impact threats.
