14 Arab, Muslim states condemn Somaliland’s “embassy” in occupied Jerusalem
Fourteen countries, including Türkiye, strongly condemned the separatist Somali region of Somaliland over its reported move to open a so-called “embassy” in occupied Jerusalem.
In a joint statement issued by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, the countries described the step as illegal and unacceptable, stressing that it violates international law and undermines the historical and legal status of occupied Jerusalem.
Foreign ministers and representatives from Türkiye, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, Palestine and Somalia were among those who “strongly condemned” the move, calling it “a flagrant violation of international law and relevant international resolutions” and “a direct assault on the legal and historical status of occupied Jerusalem.”
The statement reiterated the countries’ categorical rejection of “all unilateral measures aimed at imposing an illegal reality in occupied Jerusalem or granting legitimacy to any entity or arrangement contrary to international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.”
The ministers emphasized that East Jerusalem has been occupied Palestinian territory since 1967 and stressed that any measures intended to alter its legal or historical character are “null and void and without legal effect.”
The joint declaration also reaffirmed full support for Somalia’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, while rejecting “all unilateral measures that undermine the unity of Somali territory or infringe upon its sovereignty.”
The issue comes amid growing regional tensions following the occupation regime’s decision in late 2025 to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent state, becoming the first country in the world to do so.
That move drew immediate condemnation from Somalia and numerous countries across the Muslim world, many of which warned that such actions threaten regional stability and violate established international principles regarding territorial integrity.
Observers say the latest controversy surrounding occupied Jerusalem is likely to deepen diplomatic tensions in the Horn of Africa and the wider Middle East, particularly amid ongoing disputes over the status of Palestinian territories and normalization efforts involving the occupation regime.(ILKHA)
