Afghanistan, Iran deepen diplomatic engagement in high-level talks
Afghanistan’s Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mawlavi Amir Khan Muttaqi, met with Iranian diplomat Mohammad Reza Bahrami in a high-level discussion focused on strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing regional cooperation.
During the meeting, the two officials reviewed the current state of ties between Kabul and Tehran, emphasizing the importance of sustained dialogue and close coordination on issues of mutual interest. Mawlavi Muttaqi highlighted recent developments in Afghanistan, noting progress in security, governance, and efforts toward economic stabilization, and underlined the Islamic Emirate’s commitment to maintaining constructive relations with neighboring countries.
Mohammad Reza Bahrami, a veteran Iranian diplomat with extensive experience on Afghan affairs, reiterated Iran’s interest in continued engagement with Afghanistan, particularly in areas such as trade, transit, border management, and humanitarian cooperation. Both sides stressed the need to address shared challenges through regular communication and practical cooperation.
The meeting also touched on regional stability, refugee issues, and the facilitation of legal cross-border movement, with the officials agreeing that collaboration in these areas is essential for long-term peace and development. They underlined that Afghanistan and Iran, as neighboring countries with deep historical and cultural ties, bear a shared responsibility to promote stability and economic connectivity in the region.
Concluding the talks, both Mawlavi Muttaqi and Bahrami agreed on the importance of maintaining continuous diplomatic contacts and expanding cooperation mechanisms to further strengthen bilateral relations in the coming period. (ILKHA)
