At least 12 dead in shooting at Australia's Bondi Beach
At least 12 people were killed and 11 others wounded, including two police officers, in a mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney on Saturday evening, Australian authorities said.
Police confirmed that one man believed to be involved in the shooting was killed at the scene, while a second suspected gunman was taken into custody in critical condition and remains under heavy guard in hospital. Authorities said there is no ongoing threat to the public, but security has been significantly increased across Sydney as investigations continue.
The shooting occurred during a public gathering known as “Chanukah by the Sea,” an event marking the first day of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. Hundreds of people were present at the beachfront celebration when gunfire erupted, sending crowds fleeing in panic.
In a statement, law enforcement officials said preliminary evidence indicates the attack was “designed to target Sydney’s Jewish community,” prompting federal and state authorities to formally classify the incident as an act of terrorism. Counterterrorism units from New South Wales and federal agencies are leading the investigation, including inquiries into whether the suspects acted alone or had support networks.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack, calling the scenes at Bondi Beach “shocking and distressing” and offering condolences to the victims and their families. “Australia stands against hatred and violence in all its forms,” Albanese said, adding that the government would provide full support to emergency services and affected communities.
NSW Police said several of the injured remain in serious condition, while hospitals across Sydney were placed on emergency footing following the attack. The two wounded police officers were reported to be in stable condition after receiving treatment.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims or suspects, pending family notifications. Police are also examining CCTV footage, witness statements, and online activity linked to the suspects as part of a broader terrorism investigation.
Community leaders and religious organizations across Australia have called for calm and unity, while additional police patrols have been deployed around places of worship and public events nationwide in response to the attack.
Bondi Beach remains partially closed as forensic teams continue to examine the scene. (ILKHA)
