At least 2 dead after Michigan church shooting in US

A tragic scene unfolded Sunday morning at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints congregation in Grand Blanc Township, when a gunman rammed his vehicle into the building, opened fire on worshippers, and set the structure ablaze.
Authorities confirmed that at least two people were killed and several more injured, with the death toll expected to rise as search operations continue inside the damaged church.
The attack began around 10:30 a.m. ET, when the suspect drove a pickup truck through the front doors of the church as hundreds of congregants, including children, gathered for Sunday service. Witnesses reported chaos as the man exited the vehicle wearing camouflage pants and carrying an assault rifle, firing indiscriminately into the crowd.
Shortly after, explosions were heard outside the building. Investigators believe the suspect intentionally ignited the fire that caused parts of the church to collapse.
As of late afternoon, officials confirmed two fatalities: one victim died at the scene, and another succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. Between eight and nine others are being treated for gunshot wounds, burns, and smoke inhalation. Emergency teams continue to search the debris for additional victims.
The gunman, identified as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob “Jake” Sanford of Burton, Michigan, fled on foot after setting the blaze. Responding officers pursued him, leading to an exchange of gunfire in which Sanford was shot and killed.
Authorities have not confirmed any motive. Investigators are searching Sanford’s residence for possible evidence and examining whether he had any ties to the church or extremist activity.
The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad was called after three suspicious devices believed to be improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were discovered on church property. Specialists are working to neutralize them safely.
The FBI, ATF, and local law enforcement are jointly investigating the attack, with additional security now being implemented at churches and houses of worship across the United States, including in Los Angeles and New York City.
A further update from officials is expected at 5:00 p.m. local time, where authorities will provide more clarity on casualties and the ongoing investigation. (ILKHA)
