At least 28 killed in bus-truck collision in Tanzania
At least 28 people were killed when a passenger bus collided head-on with a truck in Tanzania’s eastern Morogoro Region, local media reported.
The crash occurred at night in the Mkambarani area along the Morogoro-Dar es Salaam highway, according to reports citing Joseph Mwasabeja, acting commander of the Morogoro Regional Fire and Rescue Force.
Mwasabeja said the truck, which was carrying timber, collided with a passenger bus travelling from Dar es Salaam to Mbeya, in Tanzania’s southern highlands.
The bus caught fire after the collision and was completely destroyed, he said.
Preliminary accounts indicated that the truck driver had attempted to overtake other vehicles while travelling from Iringa towards Dar es Salaam without taking sufficient precautions, resulting in the head-on collision, according to local media reports.
Rescue teams and other authorities responded to the scene, while investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing. (ILKHA)
