Canadian PM: Benjamin Netanyahu would be arrested if he enters Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney declared that Canada would enforce the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he were to enter Canadian territory.
Speaking on The Mishal Husain Show by Bloomberg, Carney emphasized that Canada, as a committed member of the ICC, is legally bound to uphold the court’s decisions, including arrest warrants issued against leaders accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The ICC issued the warrants on November 21, 2024, targeting Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for their roles in the Gaza conflict. The court’s charges highlight grave violations, including the deliberate use of starvation as a method of warfare against Palestinians and other inhumane acts. These warrants marked an unprecedented step in international law, holding a Western-backed leader accountable for systematic attacks on civilians.
Prime Minister Carney’s statement has been hailed by human rights advocates and pro-Palestinian organizations as a crucial affirmation that no individual, regardless of power or status, is above the law. “This is a historic moment for Gaza and for the Palestinian people,” said one advocacy group. “Canada’s commitment signals that the international community can no longer turn a blind eye to the systematic crimes committed against Palestinians.”
Israeli officials, however, have warned that the announcement could strain diplomatic ties with Canada and disrupt security cooperation. The Abraham Global Peace Initiative has called for a retraction, claiming the move is legally “unfounded,” although legal experts argue that Canada’s obligations as an ICC member are clear and binding.
Should Netanyahu travel to Canada, he would be subject to immediate arrest under the ICC mandate, underscoring the growing international consensus that Israeli leaders must be held accountable for their actions in Gaza. The development highlights the tension between national diplomacy and international legal obligations, while offering hope for justice for the long-suffering Palestinian population.
This move by Canada reflects a broader trend among nations and international bodies increasingly willing to confront impunity and support Palestinian rights under international law, sending a powerful message that accountability for crimes against humanity cannot be evaded. (ILKHA)
