Danish pension fund divests from Israeli assets over Gaza genocide

Denmark’s AkademikerPension withdraws investments from Israeli assets, citing Gaza attacks and West Bank settlement expansions as violations of human rights.
Denmark’s AkademikerPension, the retirement fund managing the pensions of teachers and university academics, has officially divested from Israeli state-owned assets following the ongoing military assaults in Gaza and the expansion of settlements in the West Bank. The decision highlights growing international concern over human rights violations in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The fund, overseeing approximately Danish Krone 157 billion ($24.77 billion) in assets, emphasized that its decision is grounded in human rights principles and international law. CEO Jens Munch Holst explained that the divestment followed a careful assessment of Israel’s record on respecting basic human rights and international norms.
This move reflects a broader trend among European investors. Norway’s $2 trillion sovereign wealth fund recently withdrew investments from Israeli companies linked to settlement activities, signaling rising ethical and legal concerns in global finance.
The ongoing Israeli military offensive in Gaza has claimed over 65,000 Palestinian lives and caused a severe humanitarian crisis. Last year, the United Nations’ top court ruled that Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories are illegal and must be dismantled — a ruling Israel has rejected.
By divesting from Israeli assets, Denmark’s AkademikerPension joins an increasing number of international investors taking a stand against human rights violations and ongoing violence in Gaza and the West Bank. (ILKHA)
