Drone sightings disrupt Munich Airport operations, triggering major police response

Flight operations at Munich Airport were brought to a standstill on Thursday evening after multiple drones were spotted in and around the airport, prompting a large-scale response by Bavarian and federal police.
The first reports of unauthorized drone activity surfaced around 8:30 p.m., with sightings near Freising and Erding. As the situation escalated, Bavarian state police launched extensive search operations in surrounding areas, while federal police concentrated on surveillance inside the airport. Despite these efforts, no suspects have yet been identified.
At 9:05 p.m., drones were seen near the airport’s perimeter fence. By 10:10 p.m., one was spotted inside the airport grounds, forcing officials to suspend all flight operations at 10:18 p.m. Both runways were closed by 10:35 p.m. The disruption lasted until midnight, resulting in 17 flight cancellations and 15 diversions to Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Vienna, and Frankfurt.
To assist stranded passengers, Munich Airport and airlines provided camp beds, blankets, and refreshments inside the terminals. Flight operations resumed without further incident on Friday morning.
Authorities confirmed on Friday that investigations are ongoing under the jurisdiction of the Bavarian police. Advanced drone-detection systems are being deployed to prevent future incidents, officials said. “We are working closely with law enforcement and aviation authorities to enhance our security protocols and ensure the safety of our passengers and operations,” a Munich Airport spokesperson stated.
The incident has highlighted the increasing risks posed by unauthorized drone activity near major airports. Experts warn such disruptions not only cause delays but also create serious safety hazards for aircraft.
The emergency response involved close cooperation between Munich Airport, German Air Traffic Control (DFS), federal police, and Bavarian state police. Helicopters from both forces were deployed to monitor the airspace and search for suspects.
Authorities have declined to share specific details about the technology and measures used to counter drones, citing tactical concerns. The public is urged to avoid speculation and report any suspicious drone activity near airports.
The Bavarian police are continuing their search for those responsible and are appealing to the public for information. Travelers are advised to monitor airline updates for any residual disruptions. (ILKHA)
