Fifth infant dies in Gaza as freezing temperatures worsen humanitarian crisis

A baby died early this morning in Gaza due to extreme cold temperatures, marking the fifth infant fatality in less than a week. Thousands of families are forced to live in makeshift tents amid the ongoing Israeli genocide.
The baby, identified as Jumaa Al-Batran, was only one month old. He passed away, and his twin brother Ali's condition worsened from the cold as they were living in a tent in Deir al-Balah in central Gaza.
According to medical sources, the freezing temperatures have led to the deaths of four other newborns in the past few days, with ages ranging from 4 to 21 days old. These infants died from the extreme cold, compounded by a dire lack of resources in the besieged region.
Medical sources report a rise in illnesses among children, exacerbated by food insecurity among mothers. This has led to more severe health conditions in an already strained healthcare environment, as Gaza’s residents continue to endure harsh conditions.
Since October 7 last year, Israeli occupation forces have killed at least 46,000 Palestinians in Gaza, according to the latest figures from local health authorities. The majority of those killed are women and children. Dozens more have died due to harsh conditions imposed by the Israeli army, including starvation, lack of medical care, and hypothermia. (ILKHA)
