Five members of a family, including four children, were killed after a mud house collapsed during heavy monsoon rains in Muzaffarnagar district of India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh, authorities said on Monday.
The tragedy occurred late Sunday in Habibpur village under the Phugana police station area, where incessant rainfall caused the roof of the family's house to cave in while they were inside. According to local officials, the victims were trapped beneath the rubble as the structure suddenly collapsed.
Authorities identified the deceased as four children and an elderly family member. Several other relatives sustained injuries in the collapse and were rushed to a district hospital, where they continue to receive treatment. Rescue operations were carried out by police, local residents, and emergency response teams using heavy machinery to clear the debris.
Senior district officials visited the scene to oversee rescue and relief efforts. The bodies of the victims were sent for post-mortem examinations as authorities began assessing the damage caused by the ongoing heavy rains across the district.
The Muzaffarnagar district administration announced compensation of ₹500,000 (5 lakh) for the families of each of the deceased. Saharanpur Divisional Commissioner Dr. Rupesh Kumar said the financial assistance would be provided as part of the state's relief measures for victims of natural disasters.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the loss of life and directed district officials to ensure that the injured receive proper medical treatment while extending all possible assistance to the affected family. He also instructed authorities to continue monitoring areas affected by heavy rainfall and to implement relief measures where necessary.
The incident comes as widespread monsoon rains continue to affect several parts of northern India, raising concerns over flooding, waterlogging, and the structural safety of aging and mud-built homes in rural communities. Weather authorities have warned that additional heavy rainfall is expected across parts of Uttar Pradesh in the coming days, prompting local administrations to remain on high alert. (ILKHA)
