Heavy rains triggered flash floods in eastern Afghanistan's Nuristan province, leaving at least 20 people dead, more than 80 injured and over 100 others missing, officials said.

Afghanistan's National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) said the flooding hit Parun, the capital of Nuristan province, after torrential rainfall swept through the area, TOLO News reported.

Authorities said emergency teams were continuing search and rescue efforts as crews worked to reach affected communities.

Officials warned the toll could increase as information becomes available from remote areas cut off by the floods.

Seasonal flooding frequently affects Afghanistan, particularly in mountainous regions where heavy rain can quickly overwhelm rivers and roads, making rescue operations more difficult.(ILKHA)
