France: One dead, three police officers injured in knife attack in Mulhouse

A knife attack in the eastern French city of Mulhouse on Saturday left one person dead and three police officers injured, prompting an immediate inquiry.
The suspect, a 37-year-old Algerian man, was arrested at the scene after seriously injuring two police officers—one was stabbed in the neck and the other in the chest. A 69-year-old Portuguese man who attempted to intervene was fatally stabbed.
The local prosecutor confirmed that the suspect had been subject to a deportation order, and an investigation has been launched.
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his condolences to the victim's family and emphasized the government's ongoing commitment to combating terrorism within the country. "I want to reiterate the determination of the government, and mine, to continue the work to eradicate terrorism on our soil," he said.
The attack occurred around 16:00 local time (15:00 GMT) near a busy market in Mulhouse, located near the borders of Germany and Switzerland. At the time, the police officers were on patrol at a demonstration supporting the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Two officers were taken to the hospital, with one injured in the chest being discharged later. Three others suffered minor injuries. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident. (ILKHA)
