Gaza's agricultural sector devastated as war losses reach $3.49 billion
The Palestinian Ministry of Agriculture has announced that Gaza's agricultural sector has been devastated by the ongoing Israeli occupation military campaign and genocide, with more than 85% of agricultural assets damaged and total losses estimated at $3.49 billion.
In a report covering the period from 2023 to 2025, the ministry said the enclave's agricultural production infrastructure has been nearly destroyed as a result of sustained Israeli attacks.
The assessment, based on high-resolution satellite imagery, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analysis and official agricultural data, found that damage across agricultural areas exceeded 85%.According to the report, total losses in the agricultural sector amounted to $3.49 billion, including $1.90 billion in direct damage and $1.59 billion in indirect losses.
The ministry said crop production has suffered extensive destruction, sharply reducing Gaza's capacity to produce food. Of the enclave's approximately 182,247 dunams of agricultural land, about 158,909 dunams—equivalent to 87.1%—have been damaged.
Agricultural water infrastructure has also been severely affected. Around 8,700 agricultural wells have been put completely out of service, while 3,828 water reservoirs and 1,371 kilometers of irrigation networks have been destroyed.
The livestock sector has sustained particularly heavy losses, with damage estimated at 90.3%. More than 5,450 livestock farms and nearly 2,300 poultry farms have been affected. The report added that approximately 69,000 livestock animals have been killed, along with 2.79 million poultry birds, while around 28,400 beehives have also been damaged by ısraeli occupation forces.
Gaza's fishing industry has likewise been brought to a standstill. Around 1,674 fishing boats and related equipment, seven fish farms and nearly 450 multipurpose water ponds have been damaged. The territory's only fish production facility has also been destroyed, leaving fishing activities almost entirely suspended.
The ministry warned that the widespread destruction has crippled Gaza's agricultural production system, posing a serious threat to food security and depriving thousands of families of their livelihoods, increasing dependence on humanitarian aid.
It called on international organizations, United Nations agencies and donor countries to provide urgent support for rebuilding agricultural infrastructure and helping farmers, fishermen and livestock breeders resume production. (ILKHA)
