The Hamas Movement announced on Monday that Khalil al-Hayya has been elected as the new head of its Political Bureau, succeeding Yehya as-Sinwar, who was killed during clashes with Israeli forces in Rafah.
The announcement was made in a brief statement issued after the conclusion of internal elections conducted by Hamas' General Shura Council, the movement's highest consultative body responsible for selecting its senior leadership.
Al-Hayya assumes the movement's top political post after a months-long leadership transition that followed the death of as-Sinwar. Hamas had previously established a temporary leadership council to oversee the movement's affairs until a permanent successor could be elected.
In May, Hamas announced that it would hold a second round of internal elections after the initial voting failed to produce a decisive outcome. At the time, the movement said its internal regulations required a runoff but did not disclose the identities of the candidates competing for the leadership position.
With the completion of the electoral process, al-Hayya has now formally assumed leadership of Hamas' Political Bureau.
A veteran member of Hamas' leadership, al-Hayya has long played a prominent role in the movement's political and diplomatic affairs. He has represented Hamas in numerous indirect ceasefire negotiations and prisoner exchange talks, particularly with regional mediators including Qatar and Egypt, and has frequently served as one of the movement's principal spokesmen on political developments.
His election comes as Hamas continues to confront Israel's military campaign in the Gaza Strip while engaging in ongoing diplomatic efforts related to ceasefire negotiations, humanitarian access, and prisoner exchange proposals.
The appointment is expected to shape Hamas' political strategy during a period of continued conflict and regional diplomatic activity, with the new leadership facing significant challenges both inside Gaza and in its external political engagements.
Hamas has not released additional details regarding the vote or the composition of its new Political Bureau following the conclusion of the elections. (ILKHA)
