Hamas reports positive progress in Cairo talks on Gaza ceasefire implementation
Hamas and other Palestinian factions have engaged “positively and flexibly” with proposals from mediators during recent meetings in Cairo, a Hamas spokesman said Tuesday.
In a statement, Hazem Qassem said the discussions centered on mechanisms for implementing a plan to end the war in the Gaza Strip and manage the post-conflict phase. The consultations involved mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye.
“The Cairo consultations... resulted in approaches... acceptable to all participating parties,” Qassem said. The Hamas official called on the mediators and sponsoring countries to exert pressure on Israel to stop what he described as violations of the ceasefire agreement that took effect last October and to fulfill its obligations under the deal.
“Implementing any political roadmap requires finalizing the agreement’s first phase, stopping current violations, and handling second-phase proposals to guarantee a sustained truce,” Qassem stressed.
He noted that the Israeli army has killed about 1,000 Palestinians in Gaza since the ceasefire began.
Qassem placed the responsibility for moving forward on “the Israeli occupation and Nickolay Mladenov, the high representative of the Gaza Board of Peace,” to execute the current understandings on the table.
The latest Cairo talks come amid growing international calls for a permanent end to the war, the lifting of restrictions on Gaza, and urgent measures to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian population after months of relentless bombardment, displacement, and humanitarian hardship.
Palestinian factions have repeatedly affirmed their readiness to engage with initiatives that can secure a lasting ceasefire, protect Palestinian civilians, and pave the way for reconstruction efforts in the besieged enclave, while insisting that any agreement must guarantee an end to Israeli military attacks and respect the rights of the Palestinian people.
