Hamas urges accountability for Israeli actions on Jerusalem Intifada anniversary
Hamas on Thursday called on the international community to take action against Israeli officials over what it described as escalating crimes against Palestinians, as the movement marked the 11th anniversary of the Jerusalem Intifada.
In a statement, Hamas said governments and international organizations should fulfill their political, humanitarian and moral responsibilities and pursue accountability for alleged violations in Gaza, the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem.
Hamas said the uprising, which began on Oct. 1, 2015, followed an escalation in Israeli attacks and settler violence, including the killing of members of the Dawabsheh family in the Nablus area, as well as growing tensions around Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque.
The movement described the Jerusalem Intifada as an enduring episode of Palestinian resistance and said it reflected a period of unity in response to Israeli actions.
Hamas said continued Israeli attacks on Palestinian land, people and holy sites would not force Palestinians to abandon their rights or their land.
It called for practical measures to hold Israeli officials accountable, including investigations and prosecutions under international law, and warned that continued violations could threaten international peace and security.
Hamas also called for greater international efforts to protect Palestinians and halt what it described as Israeli attacks across Gaza, the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem.
The movement concluded by honoring Palestinians killed in the conflict, wishing those wounded a speedy recovery and calling for the release of Palestinian prisoners. It also praised Palestinians living in the occupied territories and abroad for what it described as their continued steadfastness. (ILKHA)
